  Doordarshan and Frustration !!!

Today is Steffi Graf's birthday. On 6/6/92, Steffi was engaged in a titanic battle with Monica Seles in the French Open final. It was their third clash at Roland Garros. Fraulein Forehand had won their '89 semifinal in 3 sets while Seles won the '90 final in straights. Losing the first set 2-6, she won the second 6-3 and the decider was a nail-biter. All through the 3rd set, the old dinosaur Doordarshan would break midway due to 'satellite link failure'. The final blow was at 8-8 when DD conked out for 15 minutes and then took us straight to the prize distribution after Seles had won 10-8! Losers!

Anyway, enjoy this clip from that game. Another video claims to be from the '92 final but I cross-checked with Monica's site and it's actually from 1990. This photo proves we got the right clip.

Mahadevan Saar,
Yes, it would have been women's tennis' biggest rivalry with Seles sweeping everything except Wimbledon from Steffi. But she would have been a boring #1 like Sampras despite being a champion every bit.

Ram is India's first Environmental Historian and also the first cricket historian. The amount of research(over 500+ references, miles travelled, libraries and people contacted) he does for a book is phenomenal. As you might know, he built his library twice over.

I once saw Ramachandra Guha at Konark restaurant in Bangalore a couple of years back. He kept looking at me for some reason.

DD for some reason reminds me of Narottam Puri and that's very off-putting. That patronising preachy boring dentist ...

death to DD.

DD was very boring, no doubt and sports events was the last thing on their mind. But there are things about DD I loved. Siddharth Basu's Quick Time, the deaf and mute news on Sunday and cartoons like "Ek Titali anek ..."
Steffi was a champion because woemn's tenis didn't have too many good players. We all know how Steffi's backhand was, right?

BNB,
I first saw Narottam during the lunch break of '83 World Cup final. He was the best out of the mediocre desi Eng. presenter bunch. Narottam and Sushil Doshi in tandem gurantee 1008 cliches per day. The fun part was when Narottam was forced to do Hindi commentary for a local game - he would cobble together a few phrases, then promptly give their English equivalent to make up for his discomfort(eg, angrezi mey kehte hain, "milking the bowling"!)

I,
DD paavam.

Deepa,
Steffi's single-handed backhand was good enough for the double-handed brigade. The last of the graceful players!
Ek Chidiya video clip is available on the web in several sites.
